How to Hide Embarassing Books on Kindle

Dear Cyber Sorter,
I have a Kindle and I love it. I read a lot of classic literature and consider myself well read and well educated. I also love an occasional thriller and some romance. The problem with the Kindle is that everyone wants to have a look at it and see how it works. If someone takes a look through my Kindle books they will see all my potboiler shame.
With paperbacks I could just kick them under the bed or disown them with the words, “Oh I wonder how that awful stuff got onto my bookshelf. Must have been so and so.” Is there any way I can hide books on Kindle?
- FG

Dear FG,
It makes me very happy to say yes, there is. You can hide your entire library. Make sure you are connected to the internet, then scroll down to the bottom and click on “collection”. Then click “hide” and it’s gone.
If you want to hide only certain books use the toggle or rocker button on the right. Select the title and click to the right and you will get a title page. Click on “remove from device”.
It actually just puts the book into “archived”, which you can access by clicking the “next page” button until you get the bottom of your list of books. It is easy to restore from here.
So whether it’s chick lit, erotica or that pile of self-help books, you can keep your private reading private.

  1. Thanks for this, and this seems to be all the options there are, but it doesn't really do it. Anyone looking at your Kindle can click on the 'archived' folder and then see all your private/embarrassing books.

It's really pathetic of Amazon to have left this huge oversight in the operating system. One that should be so easy to fix! I would just like to be able to pin number protect a folder on the Kindle, and then it can be accessed unless the pin is entered. Simple!

  3. Hi. When I scroll to the bottom (Keyboard Kindle) there is no "collection". There is only a field with an ad in it.

  6. There is one way to remove the book - but that may make it permanent delete - is by going to your amazon account - under the account - look for manage your content and devices.. click on that - your entire kindle list will appear - select the book/books you want disappear from your kindle - it says - delete permanently - and if you are sure just say yes... may be it will appear again when you want to read ..if you want to download and read again.. not sure about that.. try it out for some cheaper books - to see

    1. Sunita, that will not work so don't bother trying it. You will have to repurchase if you delete permanently.

  7. I am in a similar situation. I have some self help titles I would prefer my son not see, as he does read books using my Kindle. I would very much like to have a password protected folder to keep those titles in. I have looked all over the Amazon site to try to find someplace to ask Amazon to provide that on their Kindles but no luck.

  8. Why do big corporation refuse to fix such simple things? Can't anyone admit things are supposed to improve after thousands of customers ask?

  9. I permanently deleted books going in through my Amazon account and they STILL show up on my Kindle Fire! Really makes me angry! It's adult content books that now make me feel like I can never share or show my kindle with/to anyone! Unbelievable that I can never delete them!!!!

  10. I'm using the desktop software and it definitely doesn't have any hide options-.... To be honest, it has a very few options.
